Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Carson, Installed to Age Well
We install, repair and look after asphalt shingle roofs with the details that decide how long they last: proper nailing, sealed flashing, sound underlayment and attic airflow. You get a clear plan for the roof you have now and the care it will need later.
A Shingle Roof Is Only as Good as Its Details
Asphalt shingles are the most common roof on single-story ranch homes and tract houses, and for good reason. They are light, they come in many colors and profiles, and a well-built shingle roof can serve your home for decades. What shortens that life is rarely the shingle itself. It is a missed nail line, a dried-out pipe boot, a valley cut too short or an attic that cooks the roof from below.
Our work covers both ends of a shingle roof's life. When a roof still has years in it, we repair the weak spots and keep it watertight. When it has reached the end, we tear off to the deck and build a new system meant to be maintained, not just installed.
Strong sun is the steady wear factor here. UV breaks down the asphalt and loosens the protective granules, so we pay close attention to ventilation and shingle choice to slow that process.
What Comes With Our Shingle Work
Tear-off down to the deck
On a replacement we strip the old shingles and underlayment until the plywood or plank sheathing is exposed. Any boards that are soft or delaminated get replaced before new material goes on.
Underlayment and ice-and-water membrane
New underlayment covers the deck, with self-adhered membrane added in valleys and around penetrations, where water slows down and leaks tend to begin.
Flashing, pipe boots and drip edge
We install step flashing at walls, chimney flashing, new pipe boots and drip edge along the eaves. These small metal and rubber pieces give out well before good shingles do, so we handle them as a separate task.
Manufacturer nailing pattern
Every shingle gets the correct number of nails placed in the nailing strip. The work is slow and exacting, and it is what holds tabs down when a Santa Ana wind blows.
Attic ventilation review
We check the intake and exhaust vents and even them out where needed. A cooler attic keeps the shingles from baking and helps the sealant strips hold longer.
Shingle repairs and maintenance
We replace lifted or cracked shingles, seal exposed nail heads and renew worn sealant. On a roof that is mostly sound, that is often all the work it needs.

When Your Shingles Need a Closer Look
- Grit in the gutters
- Sandy granules gathering in gutters or at the downspouts mean the shingles are losing their UV protection. A little is expected on a new roof; steady loss on an older one means the asphalt below is showing.
- Edges that curl or cup
- When shingles rise at the corners or sag in the center, they have dried out. Wind catches them and rain slips under the row above.
- Tabs missing after a windy night
- Finding a few tabs on the lawn after strong wind usually means the sealant has failed. Spotting it early keeps the repair small.
- Ceiling or attic stains
- Brown rings, wet insulation or light showing around a vent pipe mean water is already coming in. The source is often a few feet from the stain.
- Streaks or a wavy roofline
- Dark streaks are usually algae and mostly a matter of looks. A sagging or rippled surface is another matter and may point to moisture in the decking.
Steps in a Shingle Roof Job
- 1
Inspection and a written estimate
We walk the roof, check the attic and photograph our findings. Your free written estimate lists repair and replacement separately, so you can tell whether the roof still has life in it.
- 2
Picking materials
With samples in hand, we review shingle styles, colors and underlayment with you. When the job requires a reroof permit, we pull it.
- 3
Covering your property
Ahead of tear-off we cover plants, protect nearby windows and walls, and hang a tarp along the eaves to catch debris. The driveway stays open so you can come and go.
- 4
The install
On most single-story homes we tear off and dry in the roof on day one, then finish with ridge cap, flashing and vents. Each evening we run a magnet across the yard for stray nails.
- 5
Walk-through and care notes
Once the city inspection is done, we walk the new roof with you and leave short notes on what to keep an eye on and when to schedule the next check.
What Sets the Cost of a Shingle Roof
No one can price a shingle roof fairly from the curb. The measurements, the number of layers and the condition of the decking all affect the total, so we only set a figure after getting up on the roof. Every part of the job is then listed on its own line in your written estimate. Financing is available through Service Finance Company, subject to credit approval.
- Size and slope
- A larger roof takes more shingles and more labor. Steep slopes call for added safety setup and slower work.
- Old layers and the deck
- Stripping two layers costs more than stripping one. Any rotted sheathing uncovered during tear-off is replaced at a per-sheet price we state in the estimate before work starts.
- Shingle product and color
- Standard architectural shingles, heavier designer styles and reflective shingles all come at different material costs.
- Flashing, vents and openings
- Chimneys, skylights, solar mounts and multiple vent pipes mean more detail work. Adding ventilation also enlarges the job.
Common Shingle Roof Questions
- Should my shingle roof be repaired or replaced?
- Repair is often possible. When the shingles are still pliable and keeping their granules, swapping out damaged pieces and the flashing or boots near them can add years. Once the shingles turn brittle over most of the roof, repairs stop lasting and replacement is the smarter spend. Either way, we show you photos.
- Can new shingles go over the old ones instead of a tear-off?
- In almost every case we advise removing the old layer first. A second layer keeps the decking out of sight, traps more heat under the new shingles and puts added weight on the framing, which tends to shorten the new roof's life. Stripping down to the sheathing lets us fix what we find and lay the new shingles on a clean, flat surface.
- How many days does a shingle replacement take?
- Timing depends on the size of the roof, the number of old layers coming off and whether any decking boards need replacing. Most houses are done in a few working days, and the written estimate gives the expected length before work starts. No matter how far we get, the roof is covered and watertight before the crew goes home each evening.
- Does insurance pay for damaged shingles?
- It may, if a covered event such as wind caused the damage. We work directly with your insurance claim, recording the damage with photos and measurements, and your adjuster decides what is covered.
- How should I care for a shingle roof?
- Keep the gutters clear, cut branches back from the roof, and have it checked every couple of years and after a strong wind. Small jobs like resealing a boot or replacing a few tabs keep the roof from aging early. A free inspection is available any time you want another look.
